Alginate wound dressings are made of a variety of seaweeds harvested from waters around the world. The sea kelp fibers are woven into a fleece-type material that can absorb 15 to 20 times their weight, making them an excellent dressing choice for wounds with heavy amounts of exudate. A reaction between calcium ions in the dressing and sodium ions in the wound’s fluid cause the fibers to swell and partially dissolve into a gel.
