SURGIFOAM Absorbable Gelatin Sponge

SURGIFOAM® is a sterile water-soluble, porcine-based gelatin sponge wound dressing designed to be absorbed by the body. For hemostatic use, SURGIFOAM® dressings should be applied directly to a bleeding surface, where it will integrate with the body over the next few days. How SURGIFOAM® Absorbable Gelatin Sponge Dressings Work Once applied, SURGIFOAM® dressings will be absorbed by the body within four to six weeks If applied to a mucosal region experiencing bleeding, you will notice this gelatin sponge dressing liquefies within two to five days. Intended Use/Indication SURGIFOAM® gelatin sponge dressings can be used dry or first saturated with a sterile sodium chloride solution to assist with controlling bleeding and encouraging wound healing for: • Surgical procedures (except ophthalmic) requiring hemostasis, control of capillary, venous and arteriolar bleeding by pressure, ligature or when other conventional procedures are ineffective or impractical. • Thrombin to achieve hemostasis. SURGIFOAM® dressings should not be used: • In conjunction with a skin incision, as it can affect how the wound’s edges heal. • In intravascular areas, as this increases the risk for embolization. • On patients with a known porcine allergy. • To pack a wound cavity. Once the wound achieves hemostasis, any remaining SURGIFOAM® material should be removed.
